FREILUFT MANUFAKTUR

The decisionS behind the films

I. Objective

To prove, not to claim

At once solid and delicate. Defying the elements, yet warm, yet inviting. This is FREILUFT. A brand for celebrating and enabling the moments that matter, in good company as much as in quiet solitude. Across decades.

The cinematic branding had to bridge the divide between the robust and the welcoming. For the first time, atmosphere rather than function was to be anchored in the brand’s identity.

It had to prove, not merely claim. Film is a medium especially suited to this, yet it demands that every decision in image, sound, and narrative serve the proof, not the effect.

The quality was already there. Nothing was embellished, nothing invented or overstated.

It was simply brought to the surface.

II. Cinematic Architecture

The world of FREILUFT

To unlock the cinematic potential of FREILUFT, we created five films.

At its centre stands the Signature Film, the soul of the brand. As the lead film, it establishes the cinematic codes the others follow. Around it, the Workshop Film explores the technical decisions in depth, while three atmosphere films show the brand across three seasons and three settings, from a holiday home on the Mediterranean to beyond the Arctic Circle.

A single film stands alone. It takes five, each carrying the others, to form a self-contained world, one that can be entered from any side.

III. Musical Brand Identity

The voice of the brand

While most brands concentrate on the visual, the audible is often badly neglected. Yet that is precisely where the greatest potential lies, in differentiation and in elevated positioning.

For FREILUFT, we made music the strategic vehicle for the brand’s identity. The cello was chosen as the lead instrument. Tactile and, through its warm wood, deeply human. Always in contact with the ground, large and solid yet light and sensual. An instrument that goes against the trends of the industry, one FREILUFT could deliberately make its own.

From it we developed a leitmotif. Sometimes stronger, sometimes more subtle, sometimes bowed, sometimes plucked, it runs through every work.

Even without the picture, each film remains unmistakably FREILUFT.

Freiluft Noten Partitur

The recurring motif. This melody stands for FREILUFT and appears in every film, though often varied. In the Signature Film it is the central theme; in the Workshop Film it sounds briefly at the opening, only to resurface later, hidden in pizzicato or in the piano; and in the atmosphere films it brings the atmospheric melodies to a close and leads them back into the world of FREILUFT.

The motif and the film scores were composed by Ardie Son.

IV. Tactile Sound Design

The proof in sound

A door made of eight-millimetre marine-grade aluminium closes differently. Full, muffled, with a faint resonance that lingers. A solid oak worktop sounds finer than cheap chipboard. Certain sounds arise only from genuine materials and true craftsmanship.

So we turned the kitchen’s own body into an instrument. The materials were struck, their tones recorded and set into the score in place of the drum kit. The knock on wood lands as the bass drum; the strike on the metal door answers as the cymbal.

[freigestellt] Every drumbeat in this music comes from the kitchen. And that is only possible when the material is solid enough to ring.

V. Visual Authenticity

The earned image

What still impresses today? A kitchen beneath a starlit sky, northern lights flickering above it? As an image alone, no longer. With generative AI, the most beautiful subject soon becomes interchangeable. The power then lies not in the image but in its authenticity. To prove that authenticity is the task of the brand.

For FREILUFT, forgoing generative AI and 3D rendering was the only consistent choice. That is what makes the images credible rather than merely beautiful. This is what the three atmosphere films from Lofoten, Mallorca, and Münsterland stand for. They show no manufactured moment, but a lived one.

This comes at a price. To fly to Lofoten and wait for the light is to risk returning empty-handed. That very effort is the statement.

On a single evening, the sky broke open. Images like these cannot be planned, only earned.Only then do those northern lights become atmosphere rather than kitsch.
